NYABF: Still Life with Serious Conversation

This piece by Charmaine Wheatley was included in a copy of FUKT Magazine, which I saw at the NY Book Art Fair. It’s a nice twist on the still life to show some context; who these objects belong to, and what conversations are happening in the vicinity.

I also appreciate the oddly familiar juxtaposition of the mundane & catastrophic / past & present. It reminds me of a passage in The Lost Legends of New Jersey by Frederick Reiken, one of my favorite novels:

I looked at Max and understood that we all lose things. That loving anyone means having to face the pain of separation. That we can fall on a lost son’s grave and then go out for pastrami on rye with mustard.”
